Clinical Radiation Oncology Branch (CROB)

The Clinical Radiation Oncology Branch is one of the two branches within the Radiation Research Program.

This Branch does the following:

  1. Plans, develops, and executes a program in clinical radiation oncology, therapeutic nuclear medicine, and medical physics research. Radiation oncology is broadly defined to include radiation used alone and in combination with chemical, immunological and biological agents, hyperthermia, and radiation modifiers.
  2. Serves as a focal point for radiation oncologists who want to work with NCI in terms of its research and training programs.
  3. Reviews all clinical trials involving radiation therapy, assists and advises the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP), the Cancer Imaging Program (CIP), the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials (CCCT) and the Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP) in protocol review for NCI's Clinical Trials Network (NCTN), the Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN) and Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP).  Find guidelines for the use of Hadron Radiation Therapy in NCI-Sponsored Cooperative Group Clinical Trials.
  4. Participates in clinical, developmental, investigational, educational and extramural community- related activities of the NIH, including but not limited to the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) and the Center for Global Health (CGH) as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Energy (DoE), Department of Defense (DoD), Veterans' Health Administration (VHA), National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Office for Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

CROB’s grant portfolio is managed by three Program Directors, who conduct workshops to identify research gaps, develop consensus and stimulate research in the branch areas. They advise, in their own areas of expertise, potential applicants and grantees who perform cutting edge research in radiation oncology.
