Kidney SPOREs
According to the NCI's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) data, there will be an estimated 81,610 new cases of kidney and renal pelvis cancers and about 14,390 deaths in 2024. The average observed annual incidence rate of new cases per 100,000 persons, based on 2018-2021 cases, was 17.2; the average annual death rate was 3.4. Kidney cancer can affect both adults and children. Metastatic kidney cancer remains largely incurable in adults. Kidney cancer in children, known as Wilms tumor, is curable in most patients, but treatment often leaves life-long sequelae. Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) programs in kidney cancer span a wide array of projects. The SPOREs in kidney cancer foster collaborations among experts in renal cancer generating new resources and research opportunities for scientific community.
