Jung Shin Byun, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Jung Shin Byun earned a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She joined the National Cancer Institute’s Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD) in 2023 as a Program Director.
Before joining DCTD, Dr. Byun conducted research at the National Institutes of Health focused on biomarker development for cancer detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic response. Her research also encompassed cancer genomics, tumor biology, cancer epidemiology, and the pharmacologic evaluation of molecular targets for therapeutic development. She led multiple cancer cohort studies and conducted independent research to identify prognostic biomarkers and gene regulatory networks associated with breast cancer survival. Her expertise spans basic, translational, and population-based cancer research.
In her current role, Dr. Byun promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across programs within DCTD and supports the development and translation of innovative technologies for cancer diagnosis and treatment. She organizes the DCTD Technology Development Seminar Series, which highlights emerging scientific and technological advances with the potential to improve cancer research and clinical care.
Dr. Byun also contributes to the development and organization of interdisciplinary workshops focused on translating scientific discoveries and emerging technologies toward clinical application. These activities bring together investigators and program leaders from multiple programs and divisions to address critical challenges in cancer research and accelerate progress toward improved patient outcomes.
Dr. Byun received a 2025 NIH Director’s Award in recognition of her contributions as an emerging leader.
