Dr. Makhlouf joined NCI in 2013 as a Program Director at the Pathology Investigation and Research Branch (PIRB) within the NCI's CDP/DCTD. She provides pathology expertise and advises researchers on human tissue specimen and digital images resources. She also manages the NCI multi-institutional cooperative agreement grants for biospecimen banking to support cancer research, including NCI Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) Biobanks and Early-Phase and Experimental Clinical Trials (EET) Biobank. Prior to joining CDP, Dr. Makhlouf served as the Chief of the Division of Hepatic Pathology,  Senior Distinguished Scientist, and Principal Investigator in hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Dr. Makhlouf’ s research focuses on the pathology of hepatic and gastrointestinal diseases and neoplasms, especially benign and malignant neoplasms and precancerous lesions of the liver. She is the author of more than 40 full-length peer-reviewed publications as well as 6 book chapters in the areas of the clinic-pathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular pathology of hepatic, gastrointestinal, and soft tissue tumors in both adults and children. She has been invited to speak at many national and international scientific meetings,including the USCAP and IAP. Her research interests also included soft tissue tumors, environmental pathology, molecular pathology, EMT in cancer, multiplex immunofluorescence, biomarkers, reactive oxygen metabolism, NADPH oxidases, and pharmacodynamics. Dr. Makhlouf earned her medical degree from Ain Shams University, School of Medicine, Cairo, Egypt. She completed Pathology fellowships in renal pathology, hepatic and gastrointestinal pathology, and soft tissue tumors at the Department of Pathology, UMD, Baltimore, MD and the AFIP in Washington DC, respectively.
